GENTRAS develops applications and services for the exploitation of genomic DNA as the marker of group (species, variety, strain, cultivar) identity and of human individuality. These applications will be primarily in the following areas:
(1) Human individual identification:
(a) legal and informative DNA paternity testing
(b) forensic applications of human traceability
(2) Security and traceability of foods
(a) GMO identification in food
(b) DNA-based identification of food microbial contaminants
(c) food components identification by intrinsic DNA barcoding
(d) reconstruction of farm-to-fork meat pathways by strain
identification and extrinsic DNA barcoding
(3) Veterinary DNA-based applications
(a) avian sexism
(b) pedigree verification of horses, cattle and porks for identification
and other
applications
The advantage of this approach is that the basal technologies (STR genotyping and sequencing of genomic and mitochondrial DNA) are simple, robust and cost-effective.
The goal of GENTRAS
is to rapidly become a European leader in this emerging biotech field. In
order to pursue this aim, GENTRAS
applies the following principles to its business and R&D development
plans:
(a) narrow focus, high specialization and consequent easy identification
in the confused and scarcely diversified field of European biotech start-ups.
Not only because dealing with identification applications, GENTRAS
wants to reach rapidly a clear identity.
(b) launch of standard, existing applications like paternity testing, bird
sexing and GMO testing in the first phase of life of the company, with an
high quality service which should rapidly get access to the Italian and
European market.
(c) continuous search for new market opportunities, and development of custom
applications tailored to the specific potential market identified. DNA tracing
technologies can become a powerful tool to save money and increase the quality
in fields in which still it is completely not applied.
(d) heavy commitment in innovation and generation of intellectual property,
with the launch of collaborative and internal research projects ranging
from the development of entirely new technologies, to the establishment
of proprietary databases, to the development of tailored applications resulting
in the request of trademarks.
