Avian sexism

Products and services >> Veterinary Identification >>

Many species of exotic birds are sexually monomorphic: male and female birds are indistinguishable. Breeders and amateurs of these avian species use to determine the sex for reproduction with a small investigative surgery performed by a veterinarian, a procedure expensive, risky, and with some uncertainty in the attribution.

DNA sexing utilizes the fact that male and female birds have different sex chromosomes. A region of DNA that differs in size between the two sexes is amplified using PCR. Sample collection is done simply by sending a feather to the laboratory, where DNA extracted and PCR amplification performed.

DNA sexing has quickly risen to become the method of choice for determining the sex of avian monomorphic species, with accuracy rates greater then 99.9%.

GENTRAS offers its fast and reliable DNA sexing service to breeders, amateurs and associations, offering in the last case this service to affiliates through their networks.
