Identification of Food Species and varieties

Products and services >> Food Identification

Red snapper is a very precious fish sold in all the Mediterranean area. Application of a new species identification approach called DNA barcoding showed recently in the US that 77% of the fishes sold as red snappers are other fish species, with lower meat quality and worse taste.

GENTRAS has already developed a number of applications focused on the DNA-based identification of species and varieties of commercial interest, to combat frauds.

These applications are designed on specific needs and are based on a low cost new technological solution involving statistical sampling, pooling of samples and DNA barcoding done with PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The GENTRAS laboratories have already developed successfully an testing system for red snapper, eel varieties and truffle varieties identification, and are now working with GENTRAS clients on other applications.
